BUENA VISTA, Va.- The Sweet Briar College cross country got their first taste of conference competition on Friday evening at the ODAC Preview meet hosted by Washington and Lee University.

The race was held at the Buena Vista Links Golf Course, home of the 2016 ODAC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 29.

The Vixens were once again led by first-year Victoria Lawson. The Nelson County native traversed the 4-kilometer course in 19:19 and was edged out at the line by Southern Virginia's Aly Abel by two-tenths of a second.

The remaining Vixen runners came through as a pack with Jessie Melrose, Lydia Gullicksen, Maggy O'Donnell, Kim Uglum, and Claire Zak all finishing within 16 places of each other.

The host Generals placed five runners in the top 15 to claim first place with 26 points. Roanoke College took second and Lynchburg College rounded out the top-three finishers. The Vixens took 12th place, but were within striking distance of 11th-place Hollins University.

Training will continue for the Vixens, who will compete at the Roanoke Maroon Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Mowles Spring Park in Salem.
