Vixens Outlast Royals

In front of a boisterous crowd in the Williams Gym, Sweet Briar defeated conference foe Eastern Mennonite University 21-25, 33-31, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-9, Wednesday evening.  It was the 2nd time in five days that the Vixens won a conference match in a deciding fifth game .

The Vixens would need standout performances from several players and key contributions of many  to complete the takedown of the Royals.  After taking an early lead in game one, Sweet Briar relinquished a late lead and fell behind 1-0 in the early going.  The second game saw a see-saw battle that seemed like it might go on ad finitum.  After facing several game points and then watching Eastern Mennonite battle against several game points of their own, Sweet Briar finally broke through, taking the game 33-31.  After trading wins in Games 3 and 4, the Vixens decisively took Game 5, 15-9.

Senior Ashley Winters (Mechanicsburg, Va.) had a tremendous all-around game registering 9 kills, 18 digs and 7 block assists.  Classmate Cassidy Jones ('11/Rustburg, Va.) delivered 9 more kills for the Vixens.  The match also saw Alexis Rukenbrod ('12/Laurel, Md.) collect 25 assists.  Freshman Andra Brumfield (Altavista, Va.) was another Vixen that played an all around outstanding match.  Brumfield finished the match with 13 digs, 2 assists and 3 kills.

The Vixens are off until next Wednesday, September 29th, when they travel to Randolph-Macon College for a match set to begin at 7pm.
