Vixens Claw Past Wildcats

The Vixen Volleyball team took a hard fought 5 game victory from the Randolph Wildcats on Saturday.  Sweet Briar started strong taking the first two games 25-22 and 25-23.   Randolph fought back, winning the next 2 games by scores of 16-25 and 21-25.  That set up a decisive 5th game which Sweet Briar won handily 15-8.   Freshman Jessica Bronner (Haynesville, Va.) delivered a service ace to close out the match and seal the win for the Vixens.

The Vixens received standout performances from Cassidy Jones ('11/Rustburg, Va.) who had 11 kills and eight digs and Ashley Winters ('11/Mechanicsville, Va.) who rang up six kills and a team high 15 digs.  The Sweet Briar offense also received a big day from sophomore Emily Sickelbaugh (High Point, N.C.), as she registered 10 kills for the match.  Setter Alexis Ruckenbrod ('12/Laurel, Md.) controlled the offense as she recorded 32 set assists for the Vixens.

Sweet Briar also received strong play at the net throughout the match.  Bronner and Jones combined for nine blocks for the Vixens.

Sweet Briar fell in the second match of the day, a non-conference tilt versus Shenandoah, 11-25, 12-25 and 24-26.  Jones and Winters each contributed eight kills apiece in the effort and Winters again led the way with 16 digs.  The Vixens also received six kills from Sickelbaugh and two more blocks on the day for Bronner.

The Vixens return to action Wednesday evening as they play host to Eastern Mennonite for a ODAC match that will begin at 6:30pm.
