Wandling, Tucker snag singles victories; Vixens topped by Hornets

WINCHESTER, Va. — Sweet Briar juniors Emily Wandling and Lacey Tucker both earned singles victories on Tuesday afternoon as the Vixens dropped a 7-2 decision to host Shenandoah at the Lowry Tennis Courts.

After the Hornets (4-5, 2-4 ODAC) swept the Vixens (2-10, 0-5) in doubles action, a victory for Shenandoah at No. 4 singles put the Vixens in a must-win position for the remainder of singles play.

Sweet Briar got a bit of respite as Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) cruised to victory at No. 1 singles, surrendering just one game to Madison Hansen to earn a 6-1, 6-0 win at the top spot.

Shenandoah clinched victory at No. 6 singles, but at No. 3 singles it was Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) who tallied a two-set victory over Emma Crue to snag a second team-point for the Vixens. Tucker toppled Crue 6-4, 6-4 at the third spot in the singles lineup.

Junior Lexi Culley (Louisa, Va.) and first-year Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) both saw their matches go three sets, before falling to their Shenandoah counterparts.

Sweet Briar returns home to the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Friday, with a 3:30 p.m. start scheduled against Lynchburg.
