WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Sweet Briar tennis team cruised to a dominant 9-0 victory over Trinity Washington on Monday at the Trinity Tennis Courts in the final competition of the fall season.
The Vixens (1-0) got things underway with a strong showing in doubles action that saw the duo of sophomore Madeleine Young (Washington Crossing, Pa.) and junior Lexi Culley (Louisa, Va.) top Ingrid Islas and Mileidi Salinas-Bacio 8-0 at No. 1 doubles.
Another 8-0 win came at No. 2 doubles, where first-year Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) and sophomore Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) knocked off Katheryn Najarro and Adela Genchi-Hernandez. The Vixens final doubles win over the Tigers (0-2) came at No. 3, where first-year Eve Salas (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Julia Bell (Dallas, Texas) topple Fozia Jafar and Zakiyyah Jones, 8-2.
Singles action was more of the same, with junior Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) earning a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Islas at No. 1.
The same 6-0, 6-0, scoreline could be found at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles with Young knocking off Salinas-Bacio at No 2, Bell picking up the No. 3 win over Najarro and Wrenn earning a victory at No. 4 against Genchi-Hernandez.
Lechner picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 against Jafar, while sophomore Maeve Hillengas earned the 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Jones.
Wrenn and Hillengas earned the first singles victories of their collegiate career, while Young picked up the first singles victory in dual action of her career. Salas' victory at No. 3 doubles with Bell was her first doubles win at Sweet Briar.
Sweet Briar will take a break for the winter before returning to the tennis courts in the early part of 2019.
