LYNCHBURG, Va. — Sweet Briar junior Emily Wandling split her season opener at the WildCat Fall Invite, hosted by Randolph, on Saturday.
After a tough doubles draw for Sweet Briar's doubles teams, the Vixens sent seven student-athletes into the six singles flights of the tournament, with Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) headlining in the top flight.
Wandling drew Ashley Schmitz of Randolph in the opening round, battling in a tough first set loss before take a 6-2 victory in set two, a third set tiebreak fell to Schmitz sending Wandling to the consolation final.
Meeting Ally Delaney of Pfieffer, Wandling cruised to a two-set victory over the Falcons' top singles player.
Flights four and five saw sophomores Julia Bell (Dallas, Texas) and Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.), respectively, compete in a pair of singles matches. First-year Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) made her collegiate debut in flight six, while sophomore Maeve Hillengas also saw action in the sixth flight.
Sweet Briar will wrap-up fall competition at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington on September 22.
