SWEET BRIAR, Va. — The Sweet Briar tennis team breezed past Hollins on Friday afternoon with a 7-2 victory on Senior Day at the Gymnasium Tennis Courts.
The Vixens posted a strong 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles as sophomore Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and senior AJ Lukanuski (Richmond, Va.) toppled Jhovanna Salmeron and Kate Woodruff. The senior pairing of Anna Colvin and Samantha Yew (The Bronx, N.Y.) battled to an 8-3 victory at No. 2 to give the Vixens a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
Wandling cruised in singles action, topping Salmeron 6-3, 6-1 in straight sets.
Colvin joined Wandling with a two-set victory of her own, knocking off Sarah Jordan Snoddy 7-6, 6-0.
The final four singles matches went three sets each, with sophomore Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) winning in three at No. 6 over Valerie Sargeant. Lukanuski edged Amelia Verkerk in three at No. 2, battling back from a tight 7-5 second set victory to earn a 6-2 match clinching win in set three.
Yew earned the final victory of the day for Sweet Briar after falling 6-3 in the opening set against Kateri Johnson. The second-set went to Yew with a 6-4 scoreline, before Yew shot off to a 6-1 victory in the final set.
Sweet Briar honored Colvin, Lukanuski and Yew prior to the match as part of Senior Day festivities.
The Vixens play host to Emory & Henry on April 21, with a 1 p.m. scheduled opening serve.
