SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sophomore Emily Wandling earned victories in doubles and singles action, but Roanoke picked up a 7-2 team victory over the Vixens at the Gymnasium Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.
After opening the match on Wednesday, the Vixens and Maroons took to the courts on Friday to finish the remaining eight matches. The Maroons took the first team point in No. 3 doubles action on Wednesday, but the Vixens would strike on Friday in No. 1 doubles action.
Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and senior AJ Lukanuski (Richmond, Va.) picked up a convincing 8-2 win at No. 1 over Jessica Kennedy and Avery Smith. Seniors Anna Colvin and Samantha Yew (The Bronx, N.Y.) battled at No. 2, but fell 8-4 as Sweet Briar headed into singles play down 2-1.
Roanoke rattled off five singles victories to clinch the match as a team, but No. 1 singles was still to be determined.
After topping Kennedy 6-4 in the opening set, Wandling outdueled the Maroons No. 1 in a 7-5 set two victory to clinch the singles victory.
Sweet Briar steps out of conference play on Saturday, with a 1:30 p.m. first serve scheduled at Averett.
