Vixens topple Pacers; Kear, Florio among top scorers

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sweet Briar sophomore Dharma Kear won three individual events, while fellow sophomore Nora Florio earned a win and a second-place finish as the Vixens topped William Peace 101-64 in a dual meet at Prothro Natatorium.

The meet got underway for Sweet Briar with Kear (Virginia Beach, Va.) winning the 800-meter freestyle with a season-best time of 12:43.71, followed by a personal-best time of 14:44.99 from Florio (Lynchburg, Va.).

First-year Helen McCall swam to first-place points in the 200-meter freestyle, touching the wall at 3:40.46.

First-year Lauren Jones (Danville, Va.) and first-year Taylor Shaw (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished first and second, respectively, in the 100-meter backstroke. Jones finished at 1:37.60, while Shaw touched the wall at 2:09.41.

Kear finished the 200-meter butterfly with first-place points and a time of 3:22.76 in the sixth women's event of the afternoon.

Sophomore Lauren Graham (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Theresa Carriveau (West Chicago, Ill.) finished second and third, respectively, in the 50-meter freestyle, while McCall finished seventh and Shaw wrapped up the race eighth. Graham, Carriveau and McCall all posted personal best times in the event, with Graham leading the way with a time of 31.31. Carriveau finished with a time of 34.45, while McCall finished at 41.82. Shaw posted a time of 47.41 in the event.

Graham finished second in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:28.22, while McCall posted a personal-best 1:37.39 as she finished sixth. Shaw finished seventh with a time of 1:50.09.

Sophomore Sarah Ahson (Manassas, Va.) won the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:51.67, while Florio wrapped-up first-place points in the 200-meter breaststroke at 4:52.53.

Graham and Jones finished second and third, respectively, in the 400-meter freestyle with Graham finishing 6:16.98 and Jones at 6:21.23.

Kear earned top points in the 200-meter individual medley, finishing with a time of 3:11.55.

The women's half of the meet came to an end as the Vixens picked up first-place points in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 5:37.50. The Vixens' final relay squad was comprised of: McCall, Graham, Kear and Carriveau.

In men's competition, Hampden-Sydney toppled William Peace 177-49.

Saturday wrapped the first half of the 2018-19 schedule for the Vixens, who will return to competitive action on January 19, 2019, at home against Emory & Henry. Sweet Briar will host Emory & Henry at 1 p.m., with the Hampden-Sydney men also taking part in the meet.
