Swimming Splits Wednesday Night Duals

SWEET BRIAR, Va.- The Sweet Briar College swimming team took to its home pool for the third time in six days when they hosted Ferrum College and the Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday night.

The meet featured a double dual on the women's side and a traditional dual on the men's side. VMI, a Division I program, won all three of their duals. The closest competition was on the women's side, where the Vixens edged out Ferrum over the final two events to win, 99-74.

First-year Taylor Allen had another impressive evening in the pool, winning two races and finishing runner-up in a third. Her first victory came in the 200-meter IM, where she touched in a time of 2:41.40. That time was nearly 25 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Allen's second win was in the 100 back, where the Richmond, Va. native shaved three seconds off her best time of the season to win in 1:14.02. Her second-place showing came two events later in the 100-meter breaststroke, when she stopped the clock at 1:25.68.

Senior Mary Stuart McDevitt took first in that 100 breaststroke race, starting a one-two finish for the Vixens with a time of 1:24.18. McDevitt also secured third place in the 100 free, finishing just behind two VMI swimmers in a time of 1:06.38.

The Vixens wrapped up the day with a come-from-behind victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Claire Zak, Mikia Hundley, Brianna Garcia, and Caroline Thomas finished in a time of 5:43.01.

Sweet swimming will be in action this Friday when they travel to Hampden-Sydney College for a dual with Randolph-Macon College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
