Fairmont, W.Va. --- The Sweet Briar swimming team traveled to West Virginia this weekend to compete in the Fairmont Invitational Meet. The Vixens faced off with Fairmont State, West Virginia Wesleyan and West Virginia University Institute of Technology. Sweet Briar stood in second place at the end of the two-day meet.
The Vixens were buoyed by a strong performance by first year Lydia Fleck (Poquoson, Va / Poquoson), who registered top three performances in the 200y Butterfly, 500y Freestyle and 1000y Freestyle. Fellow first years Quinn Griswold (Alpine, N.Y. / Odessa-Montour) and Blair Nelson (Smithfield, Va. / Smithfield) also took home third place finishes, in the 200y backstroke and 200y Butterfly, respectively.
Returning All-ODAC performer Marian Huber (Newport News, Va. / Menchville) also had a strong performance in Fairmont. Huber took third place in the 400y Individual Medley and second place in the 200y Breaststroke.
Sweet Briar relay teams also made their presence felt in the Feaster Center Pool. The team of Ronni Schoenherr (Hudson, Wisc. / Hudson), Fleck, Rosie Purvis (Montgomery City, Mo. / Homeschooled) and Emily Snell (New Bern, N.C / Havelock) took third in the 200y Freestyle Relay. The Vixens again took third place in the 400y Medley Relay, placing a team of Griswold, Fleck, Huber and Purvis. The team of Griswold, Huber, Laure Herzog (Alexandria, Va. / Bishop Ireton) and Purvis took yet another third place finish in the 200y Medley Relay. In the Vixens final race of the meet, the 400y Freestyle Relay, Sweet Briar took both the second and third place touches. The team of Purvis, Herzog, Fleck and Snell finshed second, while teammates Huber, Megan Forbus (Madison Heights, Va. / Amherst), Griswold and Katlyn Fleming (Enfield, Conn. / Enrico Fermi) came in just behind in third place.
Head Coach Jason Gallaher noted, "We swam well in both sessions of the meet. We definitely had some breakout swims, and great races. Lydia Fleck continued to have some successful swims by completing a great race in the 1000 Freestyle, and Marian Huber also competed well with a second place finish in the 200 Breaststroke and a third place finish in the 400 Individual Medley."
Sweet Briar will open its home slate of meets on Saturday, November 3. The Vixens will host Randolph-Macon College beginning at 1:00p.m. in the Prothro Natatorium.
