Newman nets volley; Gators top Vixens

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sophomore Caylin Newman volleyed in her third goal of the year off an assist from fellow-sophomore Lera Cordner as the Vixens dropped a 4-1 match to the visiting Notre Dame of Maryland Gators at Babcock Field on Sunday.

The Gators (5-2-0) tallied the opening goal of the afternoon in the 20th minute when Meghan Conner fired a shot from 20 yards over the head of senior goalkeeper Caroline Thomas (Appomattox, Va.).

The would-be match winner came in the 22nd minute when Conner assited on a goal from Loren Pardoe, as Pardoe's shot from 18 yards found the upper 90 at the far post.

The Vixens (1-8-0) avoided the clean sheet in the 89th minute when Cordner (Macungie, Pa.) sent a cross into the 18-yard box from the left wing that Newman (Bedford, Va.) volleyed into the open net.

In goal, Thomas recorded 22 saves in 90 minutes between the goalposts.

The Vixens return to ODAC competition on Wednesday when Eastern Mennonite visits Babcock Field for a 5 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
