Vixens name Jason Capps as head soccer coach

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sweet Briar College has hired Jason Capps, former assistant women’s soccer coach at Bridgewater College, as its head soccer coach. Capps has spent the last nine seasons at Bridgewater, including the 2012 season that saw the Eagles reach the ODAC championship match.

Capps started as an assistant coach at Bridgewater in 2008, while simultaneously serving as head coach of the varsity girls soccer team at Eastern Mennonite School.

“Sweet Briar athletics is pleased to have Jason joining our team,” said Jodi Canfield, athletics director at Sweet Briar. “He brings over 15 years of coaching and recruiting experience, with nine of those in the ODAC. He is knowledgeable and passionate about the game of soccer and will foster a culture of success for student-athletes both on and off the field.”

“I am humbled and honored to be welcomed by such a strong, positive community — and I’m eager to be the spark my student-athletes need in a new era of Sweet Briar Athletics,” said Capps.

The Eagles compiled an overall record of 101-61-9 over nine seasons and reached the ODAC championship match for the first time in program history in 2012. The 2014 season saw Bridgewater set a program record with 16 wins, while also earning a regional ranking from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the first NCAA Division III regional ranking in program history.

With Eastern Mennonite School, Capps led the Flames to three straight state championship games and the program’s first Virginia Independent Schools state title in 2013. Capps was the Blue Ridge Conference Coach of the Year in 2013.

Capps received his Master of Science in kinesiology — sport and recreation leadership from James Madison University in 2017 and his Bachelor of Arts in English from Middle Tennessee State in 2008. During his time at Middle Tennessee, Capps served as a volunteer assistant coach and team manager for the Blue Raiders’ women’s soccer program.

Capps holds a United States Soccer Federation National D Soccer Coaching License.
