LYNCHBURG, Va. --- For the second time in as many outings, Vixen Soccer held its opponent to a scoreless second half but was not able to overcome the first half deficit. While Sweet Briar generated a number of serious chances on goal, the host Randolph WildCats put away four goals in the first frame to secure the win.
The WildCats picked up a penalty kick in the 10th minute when a Vixen defender took down first-year WildCat Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro) . Brianne Roth (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) got the call and sent home the score from the penalty spot to give the WildCats what would be the game-winning goal.
Sam Whittie (Canyon Lake, Tex./Smithson Valley) and Marielle Rando (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) connected for the second score off a corner kick. Five minutes later Roth collected her second goal on the evening and in the 19th minute Brittany Hammons (Yorktown, Va./Yorktown) capped scoring on an unassisted tally.
Sweet Briar stepped up its attack in its third ODAC contest of the season. On the game the Vixens fired off five shots. The most promising attempt came from Lynn Lunde (Dallas, Tex./Creekview). The rookie striker took a shot with play moving forward that narrowly skirted the outside of the goal post.
Senior Ali Lifka (Arden, N.C./T.C. Roberson) and sophomore Nina Kappel (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) turned in another solid performance for the Vixens. Both defenders broke up a number of WildCat plays in the box and both players took turns making attacking runs up the field.
On the night, Katherine Tillson '16 (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) made five stops in net.
Sweet Briar returns to action on Saturday, September 22. The Vixen side travels to Shenandoah for another ODAC match. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
