Bello, Newman, Lawson tally in Vixens' road finale

FERRUM, Va. — Three Vixens found the back of the net on Wednesday afternoon as Sweet Briar was topped 22-5 at Ferrum.

Ferrum (3-4) opened the game with five-straight goals, before Sweet Briar (1-9) junior Victoria Lawson (Shipman, Va.) scored the Vixens' opener.

A second Sweet Briar goal came with 10:54 remaining in the opening half, when junior Rosa Bello (Baltimore, Md.) scored on a free position chance that saw the scoreline move to 9-2 in the Panthers' favor. Bello's goal was her second of the year.

Lawson tallied a third Sweet Briar goal with 3:56 remaining in the first half, as the two sides went to halftime with Ferrum leading 13-3.

With 18:27 remaining in regulation Lawson completed her hattrick, while sophomore Caylin Newman (Bedford, Va.) scored the fifth and final goal of the day for Sweet Briar with 3:21 remaining. Lawson's goal was her 20th of the season, one goal shy of her career high 21 in a season, while also counting as her fifth hattrick of the season and ninth of her collegiate career.

Newman's second goal of the season was the final tally for either squad, as Ferrum wrapped up a 22-5 decision.

Lawson led the Vixens with five draw controls, while sophomore Sammy Holton (Arbutus, Md.) made four saves in goal.

Sweet Briar begins its final homestand of the season, with a 1 p.m. opening draw on Sunday against Franklin at Babcock Field.
