HARRISONBURG, Va. — Annika Kuleba shot the first sub-90 round in Sweet Briar's golf history on Saturday in the opening round of the Bridgewater Invitational at Lakeview Golf Club.
A first-year, Kuleba (Endy, N.C.) became the first Sweet Briar golfer ever to post a double-digit score when she shot an 89 (+17) in the opening round of the season opening tournament. Kuleba sits tied for 35th in the 71-player field following 18 holes of play.
Following Kuleba in the Vixens' lineup was sophomore Kendall Nicely (Glen Allen, Va.), who finished day one in 62nd after carding a 115 (+43).
First-year Grace Sizemore (Lynchburg, Va.) and junior Meagan Phister (Moneta, Va.) finished 68th and 69th, respectively. Senior Nicole Sabovik () was 71st following the opening round. Sizemore carded a 131 (+59), Phister posted a 135 (+63) and Sabovik entered the clubhouse with a 148 (+76).
Sweet Briar finished the opening 18 in 12th with a team score of 470 (+182), eight strokes ahead of Greensboro College (488, +200).
Erica Whitehouse of Christopher Newport was the tournament leader after day one with an 18-hole score of 70 (-2), while her team leads the team field with a 320 (+32). Denison sits second with a team score of 322 (+34).
The Bridgewater Invitational is set to conclude on Sunday in Harrisonburg.
