Myers hat-trick paces Vixens in win over Knights

BUENA VISTA, Va. — Sweet Briar cruised to a 6-1 road victory over Southern Virginia with the help of a three-goal performance from first-year Emily Myers.

The Vixens opened the scoring when first-year Maggie Groetsch (Asheville, N.C.) beat the Knights' goalkeeper at the near post off a free hit.

Strong play from the Vixens continued with Myers (Fredericksburg, Va.) taking advantage of a fastbreak and scoring her first goal of the night from 15 yards out.

Sophomore Alexis Jones (Suffolk, Va.) assisted on the Vixens' third goal of the evening when she sent the ball toward the goal mouth and saw the ball deflected into the back of the net by first-year Erin Orr (Detroit, Mich.)

Orr's goal was followed by a second strike from Myers, before Southern Virginia netted a goal to head to halftime with the scoreline 4-1 in the Vixens' favor.

Myers opened the second period scoring when she took the ball into the circle on her own and stuffed a shot from up-close past the Knighs' keeper.

Sophomore Kayleigh Ness (Red Lion, Pa.) wrapped up the scoring when a penalty corner for the Vixens found Jones, who notched her second assist of the game as her shot toward goal was deflected between the keepers' legs by Ness.

Sweet Briar returns to Thayer Field on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against the visiting Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland.
