SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- First-year goalkeeper Katie Torretti (Lemon Grove, Calif./Bishops School) made 22 saves in her first collegiate start and the Vixens battled the Yellow Jackets to a scoreless tie for the first 42 minutes of an ODAC contest played at Thayer Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Randolph-Macon finally broke through in the second half. Catherine Pricone (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) and Olivia Newman (Orange, Va./Orange County) each scored twice for the Yellowjackets and they were able to secure a 5-0 win.
Torretti had seen action off the bench in four games this season, before getting the call to start against Randolph-Macon. She faced 15 shots on goal in her first half of action and turned away all of them. She received help from fellow first-year Eve Mergenthaler (Litchfield, Conn./Litchfield) who contributed a sliding defensive save and several key blocked and cleared shots.
Head Coach Jess Lamina was pleased with her team's performance: "The team played the first half like the team I knew they could be. They were communicating and working well together. It was Katie's first start in goal and she did a great job, she cleared out wide and pressured the attack to finish. In front of her, our sweeper Addie Hedge did a great job leading the defensive unit. Everyone was picking up quickly and shutting down the attacking corners. In the midfield, Loralei led by example which rubbed off on Emily Dallas. Emily stepped up really well and made some key plays for us. I was very happy with the team effort and the way they adapted during the play. I look forward to practice tomorrow before hitting the road on Friday."
Sweet Briar gets back in action on Friday afternoon. The Vixens will head to Baltimore, Md. for a non-conference match with the Gators from the College of Notre Dame (Md.) beginning at 4:30 p.m.
