SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- The Sweet Briar field hockey team looks to take advantage of of the friendly confines of Thayer Field in 2012. Eight of the thirteen contests the Vixens have scheduled will take place on the Sweet Briar campus.
SBC will open the season hosting Cedar Crest and Bryn Mawr as part of a tournament hosted at Sweet Briar in early September. The Vixens took victories from each of these opponents in an early season swing through the Keystone State in 2011. Sweet Briar will also host Sewanee: The University of the South in a mid-September, non-conference clash at Thayer.
The Vixens will open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on September 19 with a trip to Norfolk, Va. to take on Virginia Wesleyan College. Sweet Briar will return home to battle the Royals of Eastern Mennonite before welcoming non-conference foe Frostburg State.
Sweet Briar will spend the next few games on the road, traveling to Roanoke College and to conference newcomer Shenandoah University to play under the lights, before returning home to take on Randolph-Macon College on October 10. Two days later, the Vixens will wrap up non-conference play for 2012, heading to Baltimore to compete with Notre Dame of Maryland University.
The regular season will close for Sweet Briar will three games in seven days. A Wednesday evening tilt at Washington & Lee University will kick off the run on October 17. The Vixens will then cap the regular season by hosting Bridgewater College and the Hornets of Lynchburg College.
"When you take a look at the schedule the most exciting part is that this year is the first time in four years that we will be home on opening weekend, and to make it even better we are hosting a tournament so our team will play two games,"commented head coach Jess Lamina.
Coach Lamina added, "We are very excited to play some new teams this season and of course the players are fired up about playing some of the teams that we have been close with in the past. 2012 is a very exciting year for Vixen Hockey."
