GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The Sweet Briar lacrosse team faced the Guilford College Quakers on Saturday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. As a result of stormy weather moving along the Atlantic seaboard, the game time was pushed up an hour to a 12 p.m. start.
The Quakers stormed out to an 11 goal lead to start the opening half. With two-thirds of the first period in the books, Sweet Briar's Allison Hassard (Greensboro, N.C. / Grimsley) found the back of the cage off an assist from Allison McLamb (Ellicott City, Md. / Howard). The Quakers then went on a five-goal run to end the first half with a 16-1 advantage.
Sweet Briar outscored the Quakers 4-2 over the final thirty minutes, but the first half deficit proved too much to overcome. Guilford picked up the 18-5 ODAC win.
In the second half, McLamb added two goals to her first half assist and Hassard picked up her second score of the game. Rookie keepers Emily Williams (Zionsville, Ind. / Zionsville Community) and Ashton Reid (Concord, Va. / Rustburg) split time in cage for the Vixens. Williams made the start and Reid came on in relief after intermission. Reid made three saves on five shots faced.
With the loss, the SBC lacrosse record moves to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the ODAC.
Sweet Briar returns to the friendly confines of Babcock Field on Monday, March 31. The team is scheduled to host Hollins University at 5 p.m. At Monday's game, Sweet Briar officially celebrates 100 years of lacrosse at the College.
The 31st marks the first of two special events recognizing the milestone. On Sunday, April 13 Vixen Athletics will host the annual alumnae lacrosse game at 1 p.m. with a celebratory brunch to be held prior to the game at 10 a.m. in Josey at Prothro Dinning Hall.
A tailgate, sponsored by the Alumnae and Annual Giving Office, Campus Safety and the Vixen Soccer team, will take place during the game with Hollins. Earlier in the day, the winner of the 100 years of lacrosse t-shirt contest will be announced and commemorative t-shirts will be available at the game while supplies last.
Team 100, as this year's squad has dubbed themselves, invites you to join the fun, watch the game and celebrate at the 5 p.m. game on Monday.
