SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- On an afternoon that saw 11 Vixen players find the back of the net, Sweet Briar returned to its winning ways with a 20-6 win over the visiting Monarchs of Methodist University. Teammates and sisters Sam and Torrey Schwartz (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) poured in a total of seven goals while Taylor Klos (Manson, Ohio/Manson) chipped in three tallies in the winning effort.
First-year attack Klos put SBC on the board first in the opening minutes of the game, followed by a quick tally Charlotte Davis (Alexandria, Va./The Field School). Sam Schwartz netted her first of five goals a minute later.
Zhane' Ruffin (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) of Methodist countered with a score to put the Monarch within two (3-1) at the 22:22 mark. Allison Hassard (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) and Davis responded to push the Vixen lead to five goals to one.
Midway through the half, Hope Motahari (Wilmington, N.C./ Laney) added a goal to the MU total. The Monarchs would not score for the remainder of the half.
Olivia Hurt (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) and Klos pushed the home team tally to seven goals versus MU's 2. Then a flurry of Schwartz scores and a Klos goal extended the Vixen lead to 14-2 heading into intermission.
SBC goalkeeper Caroline Baker (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) recorded five saves on 30 minutes of play. Katie Torretti (Lemon Grove, Calif./Bishops School) got the nod for second half net minding duties. The rookie keeper recorded three saves in the final period of play.
MU came out of halftime and scored three goals in a row before SBC's Reba Gagne (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) started a string of five Vixen scores.
