SBC Wins Opening Day Thriller
SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- Vixen Lacrosse ushered in the 2013 season with a 12-11 opening day win over Ferrum College. Junior midfielder Olivia Hurt (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) paced the Vixens with three goals and an assist while teammate Kimberly Orchowski (Crofton, Md./Arundel) netted two goals and handed out one assist.
Ferrum scored the first goal in the third minute of play as Caila Cummings (Leesburg, Va. Loudon Co.) converted a shot off a Laura Blankenship (Bristol Va./John Battle) pass. Sweet Briar answered with a three-goal run that put a quartet of Vixens on the score sheet. Orchowski and Hurt combined for the opening Vixen score, followed by tallies from Kelsey Barta (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) and first-year Charlotte Davis (Alexandria, Va./Fieldale-Collinsville).
Ferrum pulled even midway through the half with back-to-back goals from Courtney Hamm (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefiled). On the ensuing draw, Hurt marched down the field and rolled a shot right by Ferrum keeper Amanda Cheney (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) to push SBC ahead 4-3.
Blankenship pulled the Panthers even and a minute later Sydney Hewartson (Leesburg, Va./Loundon Co.) capitalized on a broken SBC clear to give Ferrum a one-goal advantage (5-4). The Vixen side clawed back to a 5-5 tie and then gained a one goal lead, but the equally feisty Panthers knotted the score at six on another Hewartson score. With time running out, sophomore attack Allison Hassard (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) netted a goal to give SBC a 7-6 lead heading into halftime.
After intermission the two teams traded scores until midway through the stanza Ferrum pulled ahead after another three-goal run. Senior attack Sam Schwartz (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) hit the equalizer and Hassard scored the go-ahead tally with just under seven minutes remaining in the game.
Ferrum fought back for the tie with 4:17 remaining in the game. With the game deadlocked at 11 goals, Ferrum secured the draw. The Panthers reeled off a shot, but sophomore keeper Caroline Baker (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) was equal to the task. For the game, Baker recorded 12 saves on 23 shots faced.
Hurt then took matters into her own stick and scored the game's final goal at forty-eight seconds to give SBC the opening day win. Ferrum gained possession with two ticks left, but the Panthers were not able to launch a final attempt on goal.
The Vixen Lacrosse team returns to Babcock Field on Sunday, February 24 for a 1 p.m. contest with University of Dallas. Fans are reminded that you can keep up with all things Vixen Athletics on Facebook and Twitter. And for more Vixen Athletics stories, check out our blog.
