Dr. John F. Morrissey is Sweet Briar's
Faculty Athletics Representative. He has gone above and beyond in
supporting the athletics program, facilitating relationships with
other departments on campus, and promoting the Vixens' varsity
Dr. Morrissey earned his Ph.D. in Marine Biology and Fisheries in 1991 from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.
After 16 years as a member of the faculty of the Biology Department of Hofstra University, he joined the faculty of Sweet Briar College in 2007. As a member of SBC’s Biology Department, he teaches introductory biology, Marine Biology, Comparative Vertebrate Morphology and Comparative Animal Physiology; he also serves as the pre-veterinary advisor.
Morrissey's research interests concern the natural history of sharks and rays, including the investigation of their reproduction, feeding ecology, age and growth, sensory adaptations, and more. He is co-author (along with Dr. Jim Sumich) of Introduction to the Biology of Marine Life.
Professor Morrissey has served as SBC’s Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) since July, 2010, and is continually delighted with the academic achievements of SBC’s student-athletes. To assist their classroom performance, he co-created SBC’s SAAS program (Student-Athlete Academic Success) with head soccer coach Kevin Fabulich. SAAS is a series of academic workshops offered to all first-year student-athletes that is designed to smooth their transition from the expectations of high school to the rigors of a collegiate curriculum.
