"I'm not sure what first tempts our students to try fencing. Could be the masks, the white uniforms, our silly striped socks, or just the chance to poke people."

Whatever the motivation, most of our fencers become fencers for life. We're a club team at Sweet Briar, but we compete with teams of all levels, and we do very well. Since most of our fencers learn the sport at SBC, everyone has an equal shot at competing. Women fence one of three weapons, foil, epée or sabre, so there's something for everyone. We call ourselves The Knights of the Holy Flail, and how that happened is a deep, dark secret known only to Sweet Briar fencers."

After graduation, SBC fencers often continue to fence. We help them to get the equipment they will need for USFA competition and put them in touch with a club in their area.

David (Chris) Beazley was introduced to fencing in as a child growing up on Sweet Briar's campus, and has been intrigued by the sport ever since. He fenced at Hood College in Maryland, and coached the sport there as well. Beazley has been a member of the silver medal team in foil at the Virginia Commonwealth games forthe last two years. He is Champion for Novice foil and Un-rated Three weapons for the 2004-2005 season. Beazley got back into fencing seriously as a result of coaching the foil at Sweet Briar College two years ago. He qualified for Summer Nationals in Sacramento, California, and hopes to attend the USFA Coaches College in the future. Beazley is treasurer for the club in Charlottesville.

This summer, Beazley taught the Art of the Sword at Sweet Briar's Kids in College.

He is QC auditor at Barr Labs in Lynchburg, VA.
