Inaugural Event Hosted at Sweet Briar's Fitness and Athletic Center

SWEET BRIAR, Va.  --- On Sunday, November 13, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and Special Olympics Virginia (SOVA) co-sponsored the first-ever Volleyball Celebration in the Fitness and Athletic Center on the campus of Sweet Briar College.  Special Olympians from the Lynchburg All-Stars and Skills All-Stars paired up with student-athletes from each of the 13 ODAC colleges and squared off in several volleyball competitions and skill sessions.  All program competitions took place in Upchurch Field House.  At the conclusion of competition, an awards ceremony and luncheon were held in the Robertson Recreation Lounge.

The event is significant to the league as the volleyball celebration connotes the first time all 13-conference schools assembled to volunteer at a Special Olympics program.  The ODAC and SOVA affiliation is part of a larger Division III initiative as voted by the representatives on the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at the NCAA Convention last January.

Special Olympics Virginia serves more than 10,000 athletes through seven regional offices and 29 area programs.  SOVA is one of 52 U.S. programs, and part of a global movement that serves three million athletes in more than 180 countries.
